Video Response

I wanted to respond to the first video we watched in class about who owns photographs when they are posted online. Before I watched the video I had the opinion that it's simple... the person uploading the photograph owns it and they have all rights to it. Wrong. When you upload a photograph of yours to a website they can technically use it for whatever they want. Unless of course it's a private uploading manager and you've either paid for or agreed to copyright regulations. Another way to copyright the photographs you post online would be to post them with a watermark of your name on them or simply sign your name in text somewhere.

I can understand how the young girl in the video feels violated because of photograph of her was used for advertisement without her knowledge. I feel that it is a different case though, because someone else took the photograph and uploaded the photograph. It's a really tough decision for me to decide in this case who's wrong or right. The girl in the photograph is angry because she did not give consent to the advertising agent, but she also doesn't own the photo herself. I think the person who took the photo should have been contacted and asked to use the picture. It is really considered their artwork, since they snapped the photo. Personally I would feel honored to be used in an advertisement in another country... but that's just me.
